It's official Tim Redding inked to one-year deal

Say hello to the latest addition of the 2009 New York Mets. Tim Redding's deal has been finalized at one year, $2.2 million, as reported by Star Ledger Staff.

Redding had a record of 10-11 with a 4.95 ERA in 33 appearances, all as a starter for the Washington Nationals in 2008, while logging 182 innings. In addition, Tim posted a highly respectable 3-1 record against the detested, Philadelphia Phillies in 29 innings w/ a 3.41 ERA, while holding their vaunted offense to a .219 batting average.

There are several questions that need to be answered:

  • Will there be an open contest for the 5th starter with Jonathan Niese?Answer: Looks like it will be Tim's to lose, although he's saying all the right things, "it wouldn't matter if he started or appeared in relief".
  • Will this be the end of Pedro's career w/ the Mets? Answer: I'm not sure Omar is ready to say adios, Pedro! However, looks like Pedro has been pushed to the back burner.
  • Is Redding worth $2.2M? Answer: I believe we probably bid against our self here. Tim is pulling in a tidy raise form his $1M salary in 2008. I'm not crazy about his left/right splits and he's susceptible to giving up a generous number of round-trippers; 29 last season.
  • Does this signing put an end to the notion that the Mets would be able to sign both Lowe and Perez? Answer: DUH!!! At this point it looks like it's one or the other, certainly not both.
